Rotorua Boys' High School has confirmed one of its hostel students has died.
Fire and Emergency (FENZ) crews were called to assist St John ambulance staff before 6am on Monday.
One fire truck attended, FENZ said.
In a statement, principal John Kendal said the school was working closely with the boy's family.
"There is no greater priority right now than supporting them, and looking after our students and team," he said.
He described the death as simply devastating for everyone involved.
Kendal said they were ensuring support was in place for the family and the wider school community.
"We will continue to awhi (care for) all of our students, team and school community as we navigate this difficult time together."
