Children at a daycare near Whanganui Hospital have been moved to safety, after concerns about fumes from a chemical leak.

Health New Zealand said the leak was discovered during a routine inspection on Wednesday afternoon.

It said it was still in the process of contacting the parents and caregivers of the affected children, who had been moved to the Te Puna Ora building.

One building was evacuated, but Health New Zealand says it was quickly contained by the local fire brigade and there were no reports of injuries.

In a post on social media Health NZ - Whanganui said they were "grateful for the speedy actions of all involved".

"We are pleased to report, due to excellent planning and procedures for this type of incident, the site was swiftly evacuated with the spill quickly contained by our local Fire Brigade," it said.

All entrances remain open, with operations at the main hospital unaffected, it says.

Firefighters were still on site at 3pm on Wednesday.
