A light aircraft has crashed at Tauranga Airport near Mount Maunganui.

Fire and Emergency services were called to the scene on Aerodrome Road just before midday on Saturday.

St John's Ambulance said a person received moderate injuries in the crash and was being transported to hospital.

One ambulance and a rapid response vehicle attended the scene of the accident, the spokesperson said.

Tauranga City Council said the small aircraft would be removed from the grass runway this afternoon.

No flight delays were expected, but travellers should keep an eye out for updates from Air New Zealand in case this changes, the spokesperson added.

The Civil Aviation Authority will conduct preliminary enquiries into the cause of the crash.

A CAA spokesperson said they will work to establish what happened and any further action that might be required following the crash.
