A suspicious package found at the Woodbourne Air Base today has been labelled a false alarm.

A New Zealand Defence Force spokesperson said police were called to the base earlier today, after reports of a suspicious package.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team investigated the threat, thought to be a suspicious item of mail, and deemed it a false alert.

Police said earlier in the day that cordons were in place in Woodbourne while officers responded to an incident, but would not say what it was.

The Defence Force spokesperson said anyone who discovered a potentially dangerous item should exercise caution until it was deemed safe by an expert.

Anyone who discovered something that might be dangerous should remain clear of the item and contact New Zealand Police.
