Police are still hunting for a person who injured the occupant of a Wellington home, and working to determine whether if the attack is linked another serious assault nearby.
Officers were called to a house in the suburb of Miramar on Darlington Road at 2am on Monday after an intruder had entered, while a second person was found unconscious nearby.
"One occupant received minor injuries following an altercation with the suspect, who fled before police arrived," Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said.
Police were also investigating a second incident just half an hour later where a person was found unconscious and in a critical condition.
One Miramar resident is keeping her doors locked.
The incidents shook Marie Ward, who lives near the invaded house.
She says she is now ensuring her doors are bolted and has changed her walking route.
Police have told RNZ officers will remain in the area today to conduct inquiries and provide community reassurance.
Local business owner and resident Vijay Patal said this was uncommon in the area and came as a shock.
"I've been here for the last 28 years, it's really peaceful here, hardly anything happens," he said.
"There are very friendly people here.
"I was a bit shocked with that [happening] in my area".
Local resident Marie Ward said she was shocked that this had happened in the small community.
"I would never of expected it," she said.
She also said she had altered her daily walking route and avoided hidden pathways.
"I thought I would stick to the roads".
Police have asked the public for any information that could help them identify if the two incidents are linked.
They have also asked residents to check their sections and yards for any items that may have been stolen or discarded by the offender.
