Police have confirmed that one person has died and another was injured after a light plane crash near Hawea, north of Wanaka on Saturday.
Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre said the plane crashed in the Dingleburn Valley, on the eastern side of Lake Hawea, north of Wanaka.
Police said emergency services were called about 1.30pm.
One of the plane's two occupants was flown by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition and the second person had died, police said.
A scene guard was in place overnight and police said they would be making enquiries on behalf of the Civil Aviation Authority and the coroner.
