When officers arrived, two people were found dead.

"I want to provide assurance that there is no ongoing risk to the Roseneath community," Ryan said.

RNZ understands the victims were a British couple.

The bodies have been removed from the home and two post-mortem examinations are expected to take place on Wednesday.

A police car can be seen on Palliser Road and police say they will have an increased presence in the community.

A person RNZ spoke to said that the car had been in the area since at least 8am.

Residents at a nearby property told RNZ they heard "really loud bangs" last night, but they believed they did not sound like gunshots.

A scene examination was under way.

Police staff could be seen coming and going from the home which looks over Oriental Bay and downtown Wellington.

Officers have also been speaking to neighbours.
