A worker has died after an accident at a waste transfer station in Southland.
Police were called to the Te Anau transfer station on Manapouri Te Anau highway at 3:30 on Friday afternoon
The worker died at the scene and their death has been referred to WorkSafe and the Coroner.
Southland District Council group manager Fran Mikulicic said the council was shocked and saddened by the tragic death.
"All our thoughts and sympathy are with the family of the deceased," she said.
WasteCo, the company contracted to run the transfer station, had staff on site to assist police.
Mikulicic said the transfer station would be closed over the weekend and wouldn't reopen until at least Monday.
