A bus crash in rural Southland has left one passenger in a serious condition and two with moderate injuries.

A police spokesperson said the bus was carrying 17 passengers, including the driver, when it crashed on Mossburn Five Rivers Road on State Highway 97 about 3.45pm on Wednesday.

The passengers appeared to be tourists.

St John responded with three ambulances, one rapid response vehicle, one PRIME responder, and one helicopter.

"Seventeen patients in total were assessed at the scene, with one in a serious condition and two in a moderate condition. All three were transported to Kew Hospital by ambulance," a St John spokesperson said.

"The remaining 14 passengers were uninjured and did not require transportation to hospital."

State Highway 97 was closed near Diack Road while the bus was moved.

Police advised motorists to take alternate routes, such as the Resolution Drive on-ramp, and expect delays.
