New Zealand First List MP Tanya Unkovich has resigned, saying she serves New Zealanders better in the private sector.

In a statement, the Auckland-based MP said serving in the public sector had been a great honour, but she believed she could serve better in the private sector, as well as coaching and consultancy.

Before getting into politics, Unkovich worked as a life and business coach, public speaker and published author.

"It has always been my deepest desire to serve mankind, and in my work as a Member of Parliament I have been privileged to be a voice to many in the community who need it the most," Unkovich said.

"I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the New Zealand First caucus, party members, and in particular the Rt Hon Winston Peters for his strong leadership and commitment towards a greater New Zealand."

In her maiden speech to the house, Unkovich said her respect for seniors drew her to the New Zealand First Party.

"It is no secret that my parents were everything to me, and walking beside them during the past decade of their lives dramatically increased my awareness of what it must be like for them and other seniors as they enter this stage of their lives.

"Our elders, our seniors have worked incredibly hard. They deserve care, respect and most importantly, they deserve human connection. I will work tirelessly to ensure our seniors are not forgotten."

Economic development consultant David Wilson from Upper Harbour was next on the party's list.

Unkovich was a member of select committees for social services, economic development, science and innovation.

In a post to Facebook, Peters said it was sad to see Unkovich's decision to leave but he supported her decision.

"Tanya has been a great asset to our party and to Parliament with her unique voice, strength, and passion for helping New Zealanders and representing the values, ethos, and principles of our party," he said.

"We all wish her the very best for the future."
