Police in Levin say a man has been arrested after reports of a firearm being discharged.

It's the sixth such incident in the town in a week.

Acting Manawatu Area Commander Inspector Ash Gurney says officers were on the scene in minutes after reports of a gun going off on Mabel Street this afternoon.

He says there was no obvious damage and nobody was injured.

A 34-year-old man was later arrested after police stopped his vehicle and found a sawn-off rifle and ammunition.

He will appear in Levin District Court on Wednesday, on a charge of unlawfully possessing a firearm.

A Gang Conflict Warrant was put in place in Levin after five shootings believed to be caused by a gang feud.
