A weather forecaster is warning people should manage their expectations as spring looks set for a rollercoaster start.

Chris Brandolino from Earth Sciences New Zealand told Morning Report Spring was the most variable season, and temperatures would be up and down throughout September.

"This is not a weather forecast, this is a theme forecast," he explained.

Many parts of the country were likely in for above normal rainfall - the top and east of the South Island, West Coast, Auckland, Northland, Coromandel, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay.

"It's up and down, it's fairly rollercoastery, but I think as we progress into October and November, we will start to see this theme of more persistently warm temperatures for much of the country."

Above average temperatures were most likely on the West Coast of the South Island, he said.

And in the coming days, South Island ski fields were likely in for a good amount of snow.

Meanwhile daylight savings was set to begin at the end of the month, on 28 September until 5 April 2026.
