As it happened: Marokopa dad Tom Phillips killed in shootout with police

Marokopa father Tom Phillips. on the run with his three children for nearly four years, has been shot dead by police.

Phillips and his three children - Ember, nine, Maverick, 10, and Jayda, 12 - went missing in December 2021, when they were taken by Phillips to an unknown location.

A police officer was critically injured by Phillips during the shoot-out in Waitomo in the early hours of Monday morning.

One of the three children was with Phillips when he was killed and was taken into police custody. They were now in the care of Oranga Tamariki.

The two other children were found on Monday afternoon with the help of information provided by their sibling.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers said they were found at a campsite about 4.30pm, and they were with police officers.
