A new 78-metre vessel that will serve the Chatham Islands from 2027 will be supplied by a company confirmed by the government today.
The new ship will replace the ageing Southern Tiare, which is increasingly unreliable.
The 40-year-old vessel has had repeated breakdowns which threatened fuel supplies and saw livestock culled when it could not be shipped out.
Associate Transport Minister James Meager said a joint venture of two companies - McCallum Brothers and Nova Marine Carriers S-A - will supply the new 78 metre ship.
The deal is still being finalised and the cost of the new vessel has not been revealed.
