Aucklanders are being consulted on a trial of reduced kerbside rubbish collections to fortnightly in certain parts of the city.
If passed, the trial would begin in February and see about 10,000 households involved in parts of the Te Atatū Peninsula, Panmure, and Clendon Park.
The consultation, running between 13-31 October, will help councillors decide in December this year whether to go ahead with the trial.
Aucklanders can provide feedback online, attend local drop-in events, or fill in forms at libraries and local board offices.
Auckland Council said participating households would receive a temporary rates reduction to the reflect the change in service, ranging from a $23.30 reduction for an 80-litre bin to $46.50 reduction for a 240-litre bin.
The council said the purpose of the trial is to gather information to help with future decisions on how the city's waste is collected.
It said audits show that half of what Aucklanders currently put in general rubbish bins can be recycled or reprocessed.
Weekly food scraps collection and fortnightly recycling collections take a large portion of material out of the general rubbish bins, it said.
Auckland Council said there are no plans for a region-wide rollout of fortnightly rubbish collections at this stage, and any future changes will be consulted on as part of the 2027 long-term plan.
