A police scene guard is in place at a residential street in Masterton, after a person was critically injured in an assault on Wednesday night.
Officers were called to Hessey Street around 10.40pm.
The offender had fled the scene when police arrived, and the injured person was taken to hospital.
Police said there would be an increased presence around Hessey Street as they make enquiries.
A scene examination is due to be completed on Thursday.
