Red Cross says new research shows many people have around $1000 worth of clothes in their wardrobe that they are not wearing.

The research comes out just ahead of Red Cross and Uber's annual clothing drive.

On Saturday, between 10am - 4pm in eligible cities (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch) people can book a free Uber Courier pick-up to collect their items for donation.

Red Cross director of retail Talei Kitchingman told Morning Report their aim was to make it easier for people to donate those items that were not being worn.

"You jump on your Uber app, book your donation, and they'll come and pick it up and then bring it to a Red Cross," she said.

She said often people got busy and it took them a while to find time to drop off their donations.

"We're trying to make it easier for people to donate by teaming up with Uber."

Last year's clothing drive saw more than 40,000 kilos of clothing donated.

Kitchingman said there was a big market for second-hand clothing.

"We're seeing a huge growth in younger customers that really support sustainable shopping, which is great."

She said items that were donated needed to be in good condition - and a good general rule of thumb to follow was that if you would give it to a friend or family member to wear then you could donate it.

She said what they looked for in clothes was for them to be "really clean and tidy and in good condition".
