A large fire in Central Hawke's Bay that spread through farmland near Waipawa is now under control.

The blaze is believed to have been caused by multiple farm burn off piles.

Six fire crews and five tankers were called out to fight the fire.

Fire and Emergency said crews were being pulled back, but three remained at the scene, as well as three tankers.

The fire began just 30 minutes before a restricted fire season came into force at midday for the region.

State Highway 2 near Tapairu Road is under temporary traffic management with a 30km/h speed restriction in place.
