A popular Rotorua tourist spot is thought to have been significantly damaged after a blaze on Tuesday night.

Thirteen crews from around the area were called to Mitai Māori Village just before 10pm.

Tankers were needed to bring in water and State Highway 5 was closed down for a time.

Fire and Emergency said initial reports indicated the conference centre was fully involved in flames.

The last of the firefighters left about 3am on Wednesday.

Nobody was hurt.
