The inmate charged with manslaughter after the death of another prisoner has appeared in court.
Johnathan Peter Trubuhovich, who was 69, was seriously assaulted at the end of November in Auckland's Mt Eden Prison.
He died in hospital 10 days later.
Detective senior sergeant Martin Friend said police had launched a homicide investigation and charged another inmate with manslaughter.
He said enquiries had been ongoing since the assault was first reported.
The 28-year-old accused appeared in Auckland District Court on Tuesday where he was granted interim name suppression.
Appearing before Judge Retzlaff, the man was remanded in custody without plea until his next appearance in the High Court at Auckland in January.
A spokesperson for the dead man's family earlier said they're in shock, and want Corrections held accountable.
Trubuhovich had been remanded in custody in May and was due to be sentenced on Monday on burglary, shoplifting and disorderly behaviour charges.
