New Zealand has been at more meetings in Europe about setting up a coalition to support Ukraine if there is a peace deal.

The first talks at defence minister level around a 'coalition of the willing' took place among about 30 countries in Belgium last week.

Defence Minister Judith Collins said New Zealand has made no commitment to the coalition.

"New Zealand continues to support Ukraine's efforts to defend itself from Russia's illegal and unjustified invasion, and to participate in military and diplomatic discussions about possible post-conflict support for Ukraine," she said in a statement.

New Zealand was represented at the Belgium meeting by its Ambassador to NATO and Defence Attaché based in Belgium.

The shadow of the US's break with the European members of NATO, and whether it would back up any peacekeeping force, has been hanging over the talks.
