Fire crews are trying the free the body of a woman from a car that collided with a truck just south of Hastings.
It happened on State Highway 2 near Pakipaki about 3.30pm.
The police said a Nissan Cefiro going south appeared to have lost control and crossed the centre line straight into the path of an oncoming truck, which was travelling north.
They said the car became wedged under the truck, and fire crews have been trying to free the dead woman.
She was believed to be from central Hawke's Bay.
