A man shot twice by police during a standoff in Whanganui last week was carrying an air pistol modified to look like a Glock handgun, police say.

Wattie Adolf Kahu appeared in the Whanganui District Court today on charges of burglary, aggravated burglary, kidnapping and presenting a firearm at police.
The 49-year-old was shot in the head and leg after the police say he broke into a residential property in Whanganui.
Police charging documents showed that the firearm he presented was not real.
Mr Kahu limped heavily when he appeared in court but had no obvious head wound.
His counsel, Debbie Goodlet, told the court he was not in a position to make a plea today and sought an adjournment.
Judge David Cameron remanded Mr Kahu in custody until 12 April.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority is investigating the shooting.
