The ticket sales target for the women's football World Cup has been surpassed just five days into the tournament.

The 1,500,000th ticket for the tournament was sold to an Auckland family attending the group G fixture between Italy and And Argentina at Auckland's Eden Park on Monday.

The tournament, hosted by Australia and New Zealand, is on track to be the most attended FIFA Women's World Cup in history, surpassing the previous record held by the 2015 World Cup in Canada.

The opening games in the tournament have also seen record attendances for a women's football match in both Australia (75,784 for Australia v Republic of Ireland) and Aotearoa New Zealand (42,137 for New Zealand v Norway).
