White Ferns captain Sophie Devine has been ruled out of the first one-day international against England on Monday because of injury.
Team management said Devine hasn't recovered sufficiently from a quad strain sustained during the fourth match of the T20 series against England, ruling her out of the fifth and final match.
A New Zealand Cricket statement said the hard-hitting Devine will continue a rehabilitation programme and be monitored over the next two days with the aim to be available for the second ODI at Hamilton's Seddon Park on Thursday.
Amelia Kerr will lead the White Ferns in the series opener at her Basin Reserve home ground.
Experienced spin bolwer Leigh Kasperek has remained with the squad in Wellington as cover.
