Fatal earthquake hits China

A powerful earthquake has struck China's northwestern border with Tajikistan, killing at least one person.

China's state news agency said the earthquake hit the Xinjiang area late on Friday evening, local time, destroying houses and severing a railway line.

The United States Geological Survey reported it as a 6.7 magnitude earthquake, but later downgraded it to 6.5.

AFP reported a preliminary check found one person died in the collapse of a house.
