The visit by the Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te to Tuvalu has "brought blessings" and "significantly strengthened and solidified" bilateral relations between the two countries, the Tuvalu government says.

Lai visited Tuvalu as part of his Pacific tour on Wednesday.

During his visit, he signed a letter of intent that recognises Taiwan's contributions to an upcoming submarine internet cable project and a joint communiqué strengthen the partnership with its Pacific ally.

The Tuvalu government said Lai also presented a 3D model of Tuvalu's national parliament, a project which Taiwan is supporting.

"The Taiwan visit today bears testament to the solid and durable foundation upon which the Tuvalu and Taiwan relationship is built-one rooted in democratic principles and respect for human rights," Tuvalu Prime Minister Feleti Teo said.

"This year marks 45 years of diplomatic relations between Tuvalu and Taiwan, a relationship that has stood the test of time."

Lai said he hopes the two nations "will grow even closer and stronger".
