Fast Favourites: Children's author Kiri Lightfoot

From Culture 101, 12:15 pm today

Children's and young-adult author, Kiri Lightfoot, has long had a love of picture books.

As a teenager she would only taking babysitting jobs if there was a generous library on offer and even reading picture books well into her twenties.

Born in England but raised in New Zealand, Kiri's first book, Every Second Friday looks at two children navigating life with separated parents and two homes. Taking inspiration and experience from her own upbringing, she noticed there weren't many books for kids, on that subject. Her debut young adult novel, Bear, explores blended families along with mental health and anxiety. Bear was a finalist in the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults and won the Storylines New Zealand Tessa Duder award in 2024.
