Nick Bollinger discusses the country soul of Auckland singer-songwriter Milly Tabak and her band The Milltones; a compilation of local garage rock from vinyl indie label 1 To 12; and an abundance of new releases from the normally sparing Gillian Welch.

 

1:30 Meet the new female artist who calls herself Deryk

Madeleine Bradley grew up in the Hawke's Bay and signed a development deal with Universal music when she was just 19. Now at age 22 she's releasing music under the name Deryk. 

Her first single received BBC Radio 6 Music airplay and received praise Apple Music's Zane Lowe and award winning UK fashion and music publication Clash Magazine. Deryk incorporates sounds from her daily life to add texture to her music, delivering a 90s trip hop inspired trance sound. 

Charlotte Ryan was so pleased to chat with her at RNZ - and first asked her about why she is releasing music under the name Deryk.

 

2:06 Miss June live at Roundhead Studios 

RNZ Music was lucky enough to shoot a series of amazing live sessions at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios. We captured performances from Kiwi/Persian rapper CHAII, country powerhouse Tami Neilson, pop-punk quartet Miss June and reggae legends Katachafire.

This week we’re sharing sessions by Auckland punk-pop band Miss June. The band formed in 2013 when frontwoman Annabel Liddell recruited musicians James Park (guitar), Chris Marshall (bass), and Tom Leggett (drums). Since then they've released their debut EP Matriarchy, a string of singles, and their first full length album, 2019's Bad Luck Party. They’ve received praise from The Foo Fighters, Shellac, Die! Die Die! and were set to open for emo superstars My Chemical Romance earlier this year however the show was cancelled due to Covid-19. 

The four-piece performed previously un-released track 'TWYA / That's Why You're Alone', and 'Orchid' from Bad Luck Party.

This week we introduce you to Wellington indie garage-pop trio Soft Plastics, the collaborative project of Sophie Scott Maunder (Beatcomber), Jonathan Shirley and Laura Robinson. Tony Stamp talked with them about their sound. 

 

3:30 Girl Friday 

Kiwi musician Vera Ellen moved to LA four years ago. She's part of guitar band/feminist collective Girl Friday, who are about to release their first album Androgynous Mary. Tony Stamp caught up with her via zoom while she's currently stuck in her hometown of Wellington sheltering from the pandemic. They talk US vs NZ, and the inspiration behind some of the group's unique song titles such as 'Ambers Knees: A Matter of Concern'.

Al Brown grew up in rural New Zealand. He’s a keen fisherman, loves Aotearoa's great outdoors and despite owning several of the city's trendiest eateries, he tends to refer to Aucklanders as “city slickers”.

His cook books and restaurants reflect his love of what New Zealand has to offer in terms of land and sea. Al loves to promote Aotearoa and our food to the rest of the world. He’s been culinary ambassador for New Zealand Trade & Enterprise since 2003. He’s also one of New Zealand's most easily recognizable chefs, with his signature thick rimmed glasses and cap. 

Charlotte Ryan spoke to talk to him about his favourite music, life, death and of course food.
