13:15 Bic Runga on her new album, Red Sunset

Bic Runga’s new album, Red Sunset, is the first collection of all-new material released by the artist in 15 years.

The record was partially recorded in Paris, where Runga lived for three years during her twenties. It offers up a swathe of songs written during a period of reflection, while some tracks date back even earlier. ‘Home Run’ was originally intended for 2002’s Beautiful Collisions, and has now found its home as the closing track on Red Sunset.

Clocking in just shy of thirty minutes, the album nods to vintage Parisian pop of the 1960s and ’70s; other songs are infused with elements of techno and dance.

14:25  Hemi Hemingway on his new album, Wings of Desire

Last Friday Poneke’s alt-rock crooner Hemi Hemingway, AKA Shaun Blackwell (Te Āti Awa, Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga), has just released his sophomore album, Wings of Desire

Dubbed a ‘yearnfest’ by Hemingway, the record mingles elements of 1980s post-punk and New Romantic styles: the result is a heady, danceable concoction with the power to make one tap their feet or cry in equal measure.

This year Hemingway is set to play Austin’s SXSW (South by Southwest) Festival and Brighton’s Great Escape Festival.

Hemingway joins Kara for a kōrero about Wings of Desire and the realisation of his sound on the record.

15:20  NZ electronic trio Minuits surprise reunion

Influential Aotearoa electronic outfit Minuit reunited last year to play a suite of shows, marking their first performance together for 12 years.

Minuit is singer Ruth Carr and multi-instrumentalists and producers Paul Dodge and Ryan Beehre. The trio was hot on the NZ electronic and dance scene through the early 2000s, earning them a cult following across the country.

They’re perhaps best known for their chart-topper ‘Aotearoa’ off their 2009 album, Find Me Before I Die A Lonely Death.com. Carr is renowned for her emotive and affecting lyrics, which some fans now have tattooed.

RNZ podcaster Phil Vine interviews the group on the ground from the AUM festival.
