12:00 APRA Silver Scrolls 2020

On Wednesday night the 55th Annual Silver Scrolls took place. It was a live-streamed award ceremony due to restrictions and the potential effects of Covid19.

Even though there was not a red carpet or a huge formal ceremony, a small group of finalists and music industry gathered at The Powerstation to watch the streamed show. 

Music 101 was lucky enough to be there with a very sparkly RNZ microphone talking to musicians and winners of the night.

1:30 The Sampler 

Bruce Springsteen

Bruce's new album, Letter to You, is his 20th studio album and he told RNZ's Charlotte Ryan on Music 101 that the initial inspiration came from the death of an old friend.

Using a "gorgeous" guitar gifted by a fan, Bruce Springsteen found new songs came pouring out and were recorded with his lifetime companions, the E Street Band, in just five days.

It was also kickstarted by a gesture from one of his fans during the time Bruce was performing his hugely successful one-man stage show, Springsteen on Broadway, which ran for more than a year until December 2018.

Ian Morris 

Ian Morris, a founding member of 1970s New Zealand rock band Th' Dudes, died ten years ago this month.

Morris was at school with other well known New Zealand musicians Dave Dobbyn and Peter Urlich.

They became friends and ended up forming Th' Dudes, along with Bruce Hambling and Peter Coleman.

Urlich says Morris was his oldest and dearest friend for the past 43 years and was just as at home with classics, jazz and country music.

After Th' Dudes split up, Morris went on to become a successful producer and record engineer and worked at Marmalade Studios in Wellington.

In 1987 he had a No 1 single with Tex Pistols and The Game of Love. He produced and sang in the cover version of the classic song.

Ian’s family have released a posthumous album A and B and C of D, a solo record completed before his death.  Nick Bollinger reviews the new release on this segment of The Sampler.

2:15 INTERVIEW: Auckland underground superstars Imugi 이무기​

Imugi 이무기 are duo Carl Ruwhiu and Yery Cho. They released their first EP Vacasian in 2017, a journey into the “diasporic-Asian-girl-psyche” and the healing it takes to go from self-consciousness to self-awareness. Their just-released Dragonfruit EP furthers that narrative.

Carl Ruwhiu and Yery Cho’s music combines late 90s downbeat and trip-hop, smooth synth-pop, and the bounce of modern R&B.

With roots in South Korea and Aotearoa, Imugi 이무기 explore the complex issues that migrant women of colour face, with the goal of embracing multiculturalism and challenging Eurocentric structures.

The duo have played many acclaimed shows, from Laneway, to Rhythm & Vines, as well as supporting acts such as Confidence Man and Cosmo’s Midnight.

Imugi 이무기’s new single ‘Somebody Else’ sparks a new era for Carl and Yery – it’s their first new release this year. The track is taken from their sophomore release, 7-track EP Dragonfruit, which came out yesterday. 

Charlotte Ryan spoke with the pair about their musical journey so far, and how Korean folk tales influence their music.

Kiwi Concert Party

The Kiwi Concert Party will take place at Auckland's Villa Maria Winery on January 23, 2021, 

Tim Finn, Bic Runga, the Topp Twins, and the Hātea Kapa Haka group are headlining. 

Runga, Finn, and the Topps will perform live on stage together and will also perform each other's songs.

4:00 The Mixtape: Lawrence Arabia

Lawrence Arabia is the musical guise of New Zealand artist and composer James Milne.

He's described his music as "channeling the pop sensibilities of The Kinks’ Ray Davies, and combining them with classic West Coast sunshine pop, together with something altogether more offbeat".

Since the release of his debut album in 2006, Lawrence Arabia has gone on to become a mainstay in the New Zealand music scene, releasing five critically acclaimed albums and a diverse catalog of collaborative work.

His album Absolute Truth won Best Alternative Album at the 2016 NZ Music Awards, in 2013 he won Best Male Solo Artist after releasing The Sparrow, and in 2009 he won the coveted APRA SIlver Scroll for the song 'Apple Pie Bed', which he wrote alongside The Phoenix Foundation's Luke Buda. 

He talks to Charlotte Ryan about six of his favourite songs and his career as a songwriter.
