12.20 Taite Music Prize 2021
In a celebration of music and creativity, Reb Fountain was announced as the winner of the 2021 Taite Music Prize for her 2020 self-titled album at Auckland's Q Theatre on Tuesday, April 20th.
Named after the late Dylan Taite, one of Aotearoa’s most respected music journalists, the Taite Music Prize recognizes outstanding creativity for an album.
Reb home took the prestigious prize ahead of some of New Zealand’s finest musicians including Nadia Reid, L.A.B, Tami Neilson The Beths, and last year’s winner Troy Kingi.
The ceremony also included the presentation of the Independent Music NZ Classic Record Award to Patea Māori Club for their iconic 1983 single ‘Poi E’.
The Award acknowledges one New Zealand record released over 20 years ago on an independent label that has become a quintessential nugget of our musical history.
Other winners on the night included indie fuzz--pop duo Na Noise who took home the Auckland Live Best Independent Debut Award for their debut album Waiting For You.
Na Noise also performed a cover of Reb Fountain’s “Faster” on the night while Troy King and Patea Māori Club also performed to a packed audience at the Q Theatre in Tāmaki Makaurau.
The evening was hosted by 95bFM's Sarah Thomson, and was attended by 400 industry, media, and artists from around Aotearoa in a celebration of creative works made in Aotearoa.
Music 101 was there for the event and spoke to winners, nominees, and even original members of the Patea Māori Club.

LA-based, NZ-born goth-pop artist So Below has released her highly-anticipated debut album LEFT BEHIND last year.
The album itself took many years to finish, with some songs being almost five years old at the time of release.
“I started later in music than all my friends, so I've always felt like I was one step behind everyone else. There's a few songs on the album that reflect that, and the name Left Behind definitely reflects that also.”- So Below
She caught up with Charlotte on her return home to discuss the merits of releasing full albums and the reason why she's heading back to LA.
