Flying Nun turns 40

Iconic kiwi music label Flying Nun celebrates its 40th anniversary this year!

We’re kicking off celebrations today, looking back at the beginning of the iconic label.

Get involved

As the 1970s gave way to the 1980s, New Zealand society underwent a sea change.

In the post-punk/springbok tour era, it took a bright idea, $50, and a lot of good will to start Flying Nun Records, an independent record company based in Christchurch NZ.

Formed almost by accident to document the evolving music scene, and working project to project, it was fuelled by a freakishly good collection of songwriters and other creative types.

1.10  Chet Faker

Nicholas Murphy, known professionally as Chet Faker, is an Australian singer and songwriter.

In September 2016, he dropped the Chet Faker name to start performing and releasing material under his birth name - Nick Murphy

In October 2020, four years after dropping the moniker, Murphy revived the Chet Faker name for the release of a new single, 'Low'. He's now released a new album called Hotel Surrender, which you can listen to here.

He admits he's still trying to figure life out, but opens up the Charlotte about the lessons he's learned, living in the moment, and his new album.

1.35 The Sampler

Tony Stamp shares his perspective on the shiny pop of Onono's debut, and Wellington five-piece Grawlixes' beautiful songs about wanting to kill each other.

2PM LIVE: Liam Finn

Enjoy this very special live session from Liam Finn, recorded Live at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 2007.

4:00 The Mixtape - Tayi Tibble

Tayi Tibble (Te Whānau ā Apanui/Ngāti PorouTe Whānau ā Apanui/Ngāti Porou) is an award winning poet based in Pōneke.

Tayi’s poetry speaks on beauty, pop culture, colonisation, ahurea tuakiri, sex, self-image, and Māoritanga.

Her first book, Poūkahangatus, won the Jessie Mackay Best First Book of Poetry Award in 2019, and her second book, Rangikura, is out now.

"As well as displaying her trademark “fiery”, incendiary and politically aware qualities, Rangikura also reveals pain and vulnerability, and some sections of the book moved me not to awe or even anger, but to tears. To read Rangikura is to marvel at Tibble’s immense skill with words and cry for all that we still have to carry.'Kiri Piahana-Wong, Kete Books

Tayi joined Charlotte to discuss fashion, poetry, and Porirua- as well as select her favourite songs on this episode of The Mixtape.
