1.30 Space Waltz's return to 'Victory'

Space Waltz formed in 1974 by frontman Alastair Riddell sharing members with bands like Split Enz.
They shot to fame after performing their hit ‘Out on the Street’ on the conservative local TV show New Faces.
Space Waltz stopped New Zealanders in their tracks.

With Alastair's flamboyant style, and his gender bending performance.  Space Waltz were compared to T Rex and David Bowie. They were Aotearoa's glam rock band.

But they broke up after less than 2 years after some bad luck, and bad decisions including leaving their manager Michael Browning who wanted to take them to the UK with the other band he managed - ACDC
Now, almost 50 years later, the band have reformed.
They have re-released their first album - released a new album yesterday ‘Victory’ - and featured in the awesome Vinyl Collectors book series.

Alastair Riddel joined Charlotte Ryan in studio.

3.30  Terrible Sons - The Raft Is Not The Shore

Terrible Sons are 2 highly articulate songwriters and singers - Lauren and Mathew Barus - they live in Ōtautahi. Christchurch

Previously Lauren performed under the name L.A Michell as well as a long stint in Dave Dobbyn’s band whilst Matt was in a successful Christchurch band; The Dukes. Dobbyn still speaks highly of Lauren’s emotive piano skills and original songs.

They married – had children and continue their game changing approach to delivering new material under the name of Terrible Sons …

To date, Terrible Sons songs have had over 20 million streams on Spotify and still counting - a big number for a band who don’t play that often ... Since then they have also connected with Canadian label Nettwork Records.

Terrible Sions have just self-released their new album called The Raft is not the Shore.

For Music 101 Trevor Reekie caught up with Terrible Sons to talk about their appealing brand of ambient folk music.

4pm  The Mixtape - Dr Rock - Barry Jenkin

Influential NZ Radio broadcaster, Barry Jenkin, aka Doctor Rock, sadly died this week aged of 75.
Many NZ  music lovers will be well aware of his broadcasting career, spending their formative years listening to his warm voice and interesting alternative playlist.
During the 70’s Barry Jenkin aka Dr. Rock was a champion of a free spirited radio – he would embrace and play music that defied commercial accessibility.
His radio broadcasts and time fronting Radio With Pictures was a beacon of taste that frequently saw him at odds with his producers.

This week his daughter Andrea wrote on Facebook “He’s lived exactly as he chose to. To the full, larger than life, belligerently listening to punk. Barry Jenkin, aka Dr. Rock, is dead. His legend lives on.”
Recorded in 2017 Trevor Reekie spoke with Barry Jenkin for this RNZ Mixtape about his career in radio and searching out music that has left a legacy that he was rightfully proud of.
