1.20 Doug Hood tribute from music critic and friend, Colin Hogg

New Zealand music pioneer Doug Hood died earlier this week after a long illness.

He had a distinguished career in New Zealand music as an engineer, manager and later a promoter for local and international touring bands. Hood engineered The Clean's legendary Boodle Boodle Boodle EP for Flying Nun in 1981 on a primitive 4-track with Chris Knox, and went on to engineer the Flying Nun's Dunedin Double EP, a 1982 compilation which was the recording debut of The Chills, The Verlaines, Sneaky Feelings and the Stones.

He became a soundman, then a booker for artists like Violent Femmes, Billy Bragg, New Order and John Cale and Iggy Pop.

Hood then brought the Big Day Out festival to New Zealand in 1994.

Charlotte Ryan calls former music journalist Colin Hogg to reflect on Doug’s musical legacy.

2.15  Unlocking Creative Freedom: Jon Hopkins on His Music-Making Journey

UK sound artist Jon Hopkins draws inspiration from Ecuadorian caves and Edinburgh ice rinks to stages across the globe, drawing inspiration for his music from these diverse environments.

Hopkin’s unique recordings and immersive soundscapes reflect his deep interest in the interplay of light and colour which play a significant role in his artistic practice.

He recently caught Coldplay’s attention, who used one of his unreleased tracks to open their triumphant headline set at Glastonbury.

Maggie Tweedie spoke to Jon Hopkins for Music 101 about his latest album Ritual which serves as an immersive counterpart to his acclaimed Music for Psychedelic Therapy.

3.15  Pitch Black's music remixed by hero producer Adrian Sherwood

NZ electronic duo, Pitch Black, have been making electronic music since 1996.

Michael Hodgson and Paddy Free have pioneered their own sound that blends dub and electronica. Pitch Black's first performance was at the Gathering New Year's eve festival in 1996, and since then have roused dance floors all over the world, generating rave reviews and working with other incredible musicians.

Their new EP Echoes of the Night is a fresh batch of Pitch Black remixes by none other than UK legendary producer Adrian Sherwood - who, as it turns out, is also a fan.

4pm The Mixtape: Musician and entertainer Anika Moa

Our guest on the RNZ Mixtape is broadcaster, singer and author Anika Moa.

Starting her music career over 20 years ago, Anika is one of Aotearoa's most loved musicians. She has written some of our favourite songs for adults and bubbas, hosted her own TV shows, worked as a radio breakfast host, but more recently has slowed down her work life to spend time with her children.

But has she? Anika has just released a children's book, has been writing new music, and is about to act in a theater adaptation of Peter Pan.

And the second season of her podcast It’s Personal with Anika Moa has just launched on RNZ.
