Two icons of twentieth century pop music have died this week: Sylvester Stewart, AKA Sly Stone and Brian Wilson, just days later. They were both 82.

Soul and funk icon Sly Stone was the leader of ’70s funk rock group Sly and the Family Stone, who wrote hits such as ‘Everyday People’ and ‘If You Want Me to Stay’.

Brian Wilson founded the Beach Boys with his brothers and cousin in the early 1960s. Their close barber shop-style harmonies are incredibly distinctive to the band’s sound and the music encapsulated the zeitgeist of surfing culture in California during the early ’60s.

Music journalist Nick Bollinger joined Kara Rickard on Music 101 to explore their legacies.
