Kaikōura's rates could rise 17 percent over the next two years to help fund the earthquake recovery, the mayor says.
Kaikōura District Council's draft Three Year Plan proposes multi-million dollar investments in infrastructure and the earthquake rebuild.
The area was devastated by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in November 2016.
Kaikōura mayor Winston Grey said a 17 percent rates increase over two years would fund much needed infrastructure projects.
"We've got our main sewer line badly damaged, we've got obviously quite a lot of work to do with the water, plus some of the increased works that will be required for water across the nation.
"And our roading, mainly bridges, so we've got five bridges to be replaced.
"Just to get that work done and out of the way."
