A stretch of highway south of New Plymouth is closed to southbound traffic until late Friday night after a tomo, or sinkhole opened up.

The Transport Agency said the problem on State Highway Three between Mangorei and Hydro Road formed at the Mangorei Stream Bridge, just south of Burgess Hill Road.

Repair crews hope to have it fixed by 8pm tonight.

Northbound lanes on the highway are still open but other traffic is being diverted via Mangorei Road.

Motorists are being urged to use SH3A/SH45 as alternative routes south.

NZTA said the highway could remain under a temporary speed limit over the weekend but will be open to both lanes of traffic.
