The long term Uber driver who died in a crash on the Wellington motorway last month can now be named as Lower Hutt resident Alan Lindsay Ferguson, known as Lindsay.

Police were called to the two-vehicle crash at about 11.30pm on Saturday, 22 March, in the northbound lanes of the Kaiwharawhara section of State Highway 1.

Ferguson, 72, died at the scene.

The passenger in his car and the driver from another car were taken to hospital injured.

Uber confirmed Ferguson was one of its drivers.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Lindsay, a long-term member of the Uber driver community," a spokesperson said.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time and we have reached out to offer our support."

Police were still investigating, including speaking to those involved in the crash.
