Auckland firefighters are being taken out to a small boat on the Waitematā Harbour, after fire broke out in the engineroom.

Fire and Emergency says it was alerted by the Marine Rescue Centre at about 1pm Saturday.

A coastguard rescue vessel is taking four firefighters from the Howick Fire Station to the stricken boat near Waiheke Island.

They will ensure the fire is out and that there is no danger, before the boat is towed to shore.

It's not known whether anyone has been injured or the extent of damage to the vessel.
