A water reservoir in Wellington has been pulled offline after a small lizard was discovered during routine maintenance work on Friday.
Wellington Water says the Maupuia Reservoir has been isolated from the network and drinking water supply is now being supplied from an alternative local reservoir.
It says customers' water supply is currently not affected.
Initial testing indicates there is residual chlorine in the network and therefore very low risk to public health.
But Wellington Water says out of caution the reservoir will be fully drained and super-chlorinated over the next two to three days and refilled.
Further testing will be done over the next 72 hours.
Wellington Water has also notified Regional Public Health and Taumata Arowai.
