The Black Caps have taken the early lead in the three-match one-day series against England, with a four-wicket win at Mount Maunganui.

Sent in to bat, England were in trouble early, losing four wickets for 10 runs after 5.1 overs at Bay Oval, but a century from captain Harry Brook put the visitors back on track.

Brook's 135 and 46 from No.8 batter Jamie Overton were the only scores of note, as England reached a total of 223, before New Zealand bowled them out in the 36th over.

Zak Foulkes was the best with the ball for the New Zealanders with 4/41 off his seven overs. Jacob Duffy took 3/55 off six overs, as he took apart the lower order.

In reply, the Black Caps also lost early wickets, including the returning Kane Williamson for a duck, before Daryl Mitchell came to the rescue with an unbeaten 78 off 91 balls.

Mitchell was supported by Michael Bracewell, who had a run-a-ball 51, before he was run out in the 27th over.

Captain Mitch Santner also contributed 27 runs, as New Zealand chased down the required total in the 37th over.

Brydon Carse took 3/45 off 10 overs for the visitors.

Game two in the series will be in Hamilton on Wednesday.
