Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday

The Situation

A ridge of high pressure moves east over the country today, with northerly flow developing over the lower South Island after it has passed. Tomorrow, a strong front embedded in the northerly flow moves east over the lower half of the South Island.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland

Cloudy periods and isolated showers.

Auckland to Horowhenua, also Coromandel Peninsula and the central high country

Cloudy periods, especially about Taranaki and Taupo, with a few showers there tomorrow.

Bay of Plenty, also Gisborne to Wairarapa

Fine, except for a isolated showers about northern Gisborne. Cloud increasing tomorrow.

Kapiti Coast and Wellington

Becoming cloudy this evening, with a few showers overnight and tomorrow morning.

Nelson and Marlborough

Fine today. Cloudy with occasional rain tomorrow.

Buller to Fiordland

Rain spreading north today, becoming heavy and more persistent about Westland and Fiordland tomorrow.

Canterbury, Otago and Southland

Mainly fine today. Cloudy tomorrow, with rain in Southland at night.

Chatham Islands

Cloudy periods, and a few light showers today.

Thursday

North Island: Rain developing in the west. A few showers elsewhere. Northerlies rising to gale in exposed places, possibly severe. South Island: Rain with heavy falls, easing in the south. Gale northerlies, possibly severe in exposed places, easing.

Friday

North Island: Rain, heavy for a time, easing to showers later. Gale northerlies, possibly severe in exposed places, easing later. South Island: Rain spreading south, with heavy falls.

Saturday

North Island: Showers, especially in the west, easing. South Island: Heavy rain in the east, easing. Occasional rain or showers elsewhere, easing. Gale southwesterlies developing in the east, possibly severe.

Cloudy periods and the odd shower, then rain developing on Saturday. Strong northerlies.
