The Situation

High pressure covers the country today. On Tuesday, northwesterlies strengthen over the south of the South Island while a ridge covers the North Island.

Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow

Northland and Coromandel

Partly cloudy with isolated showers about the east coast of Northland, spreading to the remainder of Northland tomorrow morning and to Coromandel late tomorrow evening.

Gisborne and Hawke's Bay

Cloudy periods. Isolated showers about Gisborne and the Wairoa District, clearing this evening and becoming fine everywhere.

Auckland to Waitomo, also the central high country and Wairarapa

Mostly sunny. Areas of valley fog tomorrow morning.

Taranaki to Wellington, also Bay of Plenty

Fine today. Partly cloudy tomorrow with isolated afternoon showers about Wellington and Kapiti.

Marlborough and Nelson

Partly cloudy.

Buller, Grey, Westland, Fiordland and Stewart Island

Often cloudy, with isolated showers south of Milford Sound, extending elsewhere tomorrow.

Canterbury, Otago and Southland

Fine, apart from areas of morning fog.

Chatham Islands

Mostly cloudy.

Wednesday

North Island: Fine, apart from isolated showers in the north and west. South Island: Rain for Westland and Fiordland and a few showers in the northwest. Partly cloudy elsewhere.

Thursday

North Island: Rain developing in the north. Fine in the east, isolated showers elsewhere. South Island: Rain with heavy falls for most. Isolated showers developing in the northeast.

Friday

North Island: Rain with heavy falls, easing in the south and west. South Island: Rain with heavy falls from Otago northwards, clearing early. Showers developing for Fiordland and Southland, mainly fine elsewhere.

Partly cloudy, becoming fine on Thursday. Rain developing late Friday. Northwesterlies becoming strong on Thursday and rising to gale on Friday.
