Dining out is not a new phenomenon. In fact there's been two significant booms in New Zealand restaurant history – both associated with good times economically. As the century turned in the year 1900, New Zealand had 200+ restaurants, and the largest seated 700 people. In the 1960s, a change in the liquor licencing laws heralded an entirely new restaurant experience for diners. Amelia Nurse tells the story of two significant eras in New Zealand restaurant history.
