2PM LIVE: RNZ Music Live Sessions | Mara TK
It’s time for another RNZ Music Live Session! This time we’re joined by Wellington singer and songwriter, Mara TK (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu, Tainui), who you may know from his time as frontman of Electric Wire Hustle.
Mara performed a smooth and soulful set of songs from his debut solo album Bad Meditation, live at Te Noho Kotahitanga marae at Auckland’s Unitec.
It’s been five years since Mara’s band Electric Wire Hustle called it quits. He’s spent that time learning how to use a studio’s worth of equipment he bought off a friend, and Bad Meditation is the result.
On the album, Mara sings about his Māori heritage, the tension between that and colonial/capitalist culture, and growing up in poverty.
Mara had planned to play live in Wellington this month, but due to Covid restrictions, has had to postpone. Keep an eye on undertheradar.co.nz for future gig announcements.
Stay tuned for more live sessions from Mara TK, and TE KAAHU coming your way soon.
Made possible with support from NZ On Air Music.

2.30 Interview: Bilingual duo Aro
Aro is husband and wife duo, Charles and Emily Looker. They met while studying a Bachelor of Music at the University of Auckland, where they discovered they share a passion for the power of language and music to tell stories and remind us of our cultural identity. In 2019 they were a Silver Scrolls finalist and last year a finalist for the APRA Best Children's Song Award.
They released their third EP He Wai this week. It’s part of a wider project that includes workshops and a tour.
He Wai's new waiata are used as a part of the educational resources and programme the couple created for schools and Kura Kaupapa Māori. While touring their He Wai, they take these workshops to schools around the country.
Aro joined Charlotte over the phone to discuss the meaning behind the water-inspired EP, and their excitement about the rising popularity of bilingual music in Aotearoa.
