Music 101 for Saturday 9 November 2024
1.20 Which music festival is right for you?
Summer music festival season is upon us and for us music lovers it’s a great time of year. But let’s be blunt, concerts aren’t cheap, and especially right now with the cost of living, picking the right festival can be risky.
RNZ music journalist and ex-stage manager Amberleigh Jack has compiled a guide to help pick the perfect summer gig.

Ladi6 kicked off her ‘Alofa Heartbeats Tour’ last night, and catches up with Charlotte Ryan ahead of the November shows.
Alofa: The Heartbeat Tour Aotearoa:

2.15 Psychedelic folk artist Arthur Ahbez on new album: ‘I wanted it to be analogue and raw’
Psychedelic folk songwriter, Arthur Ahbez has released his third album Arthur Ahbez and the Flaming Ahbez.
His vintage-inspired, acid-tinged rock ’n’ roll sound has drawn comparisons to musicians from the 1960s, yet this Tirau-based artist’s music is grown from the soil of his personal philosophy.
Arthur joins Charlotte in the studio to talk about his brand new album.
3.15 Adam Hattaway and the Haunters: Live session
Adam Hattaway has released his sixth full length album today with his band the Haunters. High Horse, produced by Marlon Williams has taken a shift in style for the alt-rock n roll singer. Striving to create an album that is ‘‘frustratingly quiet’’ High Horse is a dark yet warm, reverb soaked, rainy day collection of loner anthems.
The band are about to resume their relentless touring schedule, but joined us on Music 101 for a live session before hitting the road.
3.40 Review: Songs of a Lost World by The Cure
The British gloom icons return after sixteen years with a collection unfurls slowly and generously, luxuriating in Robert Smith's chord choices and surprisingly spry voice.
4pm The Mixtape: Writer Megan Dunn
Our guest on the RNZ Mixtape is author, artist and writer Megan Dunn.
Megan recently explored a life-long obsession with mermaids which resulted in her ‘mer-moir’ The Mermaid Chronicles.
She studied art in the 90s, worked in all sorts of places - including a strip club – and writes about her experiences.
Megan considers herself a cross between Fran Lebowitz and Anne of Green Gables, via Huntly and is a well-known voice on RNZ.
She will join Kim Hill in conversation about her new book at Verb Wellington this weekend. https://www.verbwellington.nz/festival-2024-events/the-mermaid-chronicles
